Update

Sorry I haven't been posting, but there was really nothing to post. Katie has an aunt who lives in a nursing home,
she is 87. Katie is the only one who looks after her affairs.

Last week, her aunt had to go to hospital and Katie besides work spent two days there. That completely
threw us off our routine, so we ended up grabbing whatever we could because that's all we had time for.
Then a couple of days later, our wall oven of 5 years decided it would not perform anymore, so that
also contributed to getting us off our routine.

You might say, what do you need an oven for when you are basically eating only fruits and vegetables?
Well, we don't want to eat raw vegetables all the time, and stir fry everyday will get too boring....
besides we've both been busy, and then had to look for a new oven. Our new oven will not be
available until next Wednesday and then depending...I may be able to install it myself or might have
to get some help.

At any rate...at the moment we are not doing exactly what we did the first 12 days. We certainly
don't intend to quit that, because it was very successful, but will likely not resume in full until
we get back to normal.

In the meantime, I am at 246 lbs, so I'm up 4 and my sugar level in the morning is back in the
low 8's...so that really says something about eating lots of fruits and vegetables vs not going
crazy with eating, but catching what you can.

For those of you who wish to keep checking in...great!

glad to have you

For those that don't...thanks anyway

Day 16

242.2 lbs and blood sugar 6.2. Katie was down .4 lb. okOne thing is obvious...if a person is diabetic or pre-diabetic and they want to get their sugar levels down, one way is to lose weight, the other which is obvious, is to eat like this.

Regular breakfast this morning, and of course the regular side of vitamins.

Had a big salad for lunch

For supper we had a really good vegetable stir fry prepared of course by Katie.
Fruit for dessert.

Day 15

243.4 lbs this morning, sugar level 6.7 which is excellent! So on our rest day I managed to gain 1.4 lbs. and that is without being really bad...lots if not most people these days eat worse than we did on Saturday. Katie is up 1.4 as well. They should put this on all foods...eat this combination and you will gain 1.4 lbs...

Good part is, yesterday we were right back on the regime. Had regular breakfast, had lentil soup for lunch, and had bean taco salad for supper with fruit for dessert.

Regular breakfast again this morning...it just works the best for us and is a good start to the day.

Had a good salad for lunch with home made Balsamic Vinegar dressing.

Had home made vegetable lentil soup for supper...
It was good...but I enjoyed the last home made soup that Katie made even better. I can tell you one thing, it contains all things that are good for you and ingredients that I never would have eaten many years ago.

Fruit for dessert.

Day 13

242 this morning...again heading in the right direction and very very close to 10 pound loss. Nice...been a long time! Sugar 7.8...that's ok as well.

Katie is also down another pound so she is also close to 10 pound loss. Excellent!

Today...we are taking a rest...so we are having turkey bacon, eggs and toast for breakfast. We've been strict for 12 days so now it is rest time for one day. We will see how badly that sets us back, but we are not really focused on that as long as we get back on track and do what we have been doing for the last 12 days.

After a few errands, Katie and I went to the casino, where we had a great day. We didn't have lunch as we weren't hungry. We had a roasted chicken club house sandwich and fries for supper. We had popcorn later on in the night, so it was really a rest day from what we've been doing that's for sure.

I was not going to post the weight part after a day like that, but because I want this blog to be good for all and educational, I can tell you the scale shows .6 lb gain and Katie shows a 2 lb gain which is probably somewhat retaining water on account of too much salt content. Sugar reading 7.1 so that didn't take a beating...at least not yet.

So now that we had a day eating things that taste great but we know are bad for us, at least the bacon on the club sandwich and the other condiments like cheese, and the butter on the popcorn, are we done? Not by a long shot, we are right back to the eat to live regime today.

Day 12

243.2 lbs this morning still dropping and feeling just fine. Blood sugar 6.9 this morning, also a lot better than 8 point something. Katie is also down 1 lb this morning.

Regular breakfast again this morning.

I was talking to someone yesterday who was telling me that a man I know went on the latest craze "Dukan Diet" from France. He wanted to lost 15 pounds but instead lost 25. I think what a lot of people like about it is that there are a couple of  "cheat days" when you get into the 2nd phase.

Katie and I are not thinking about this type of diet because it involves eating lean meat. We can tell you this...when we were vegans for 4 months, we did not have the bloated feeling, no heartburn whatsoever, and generally felt better. Soon as we have meat those things return. Why? because it takes 3 days for meat to go through your system. What we are doing now is certainly having the same results as being Vegan, but the difference is that we are trying to give ourselves a good kickstart losing weight so we are not eating pasta, breads etc. which we did when we were Vegan.

I have no idea if we are going to be able to maintain this, or even if we will want to. We do know one thing and that is we both have pounds to lose, but rather than Dukan Diet we would much rather do it in a more healthful way by eating fruits and vegetables rather than any type of meat.

Interesting quote from a recent study "A low-carbohydrate diet rich in animal foods was associated with a 23% increased risk of death from all causes (14% increased risk of death from cardiovascular disease). In contrast, a low-carbohydrate diet rich in vegetables was associated with a 20% decreased risk of death from all causes (23% decreased risk of death from cardiovascular disease)"

We still want to be "Social", it is much too difficult to be a vegan or eat nothing but fruits and vegetables when all around you, especially when traveling, or we are spending a month in Texas with lots of friends and happy hours.

So our goal is to get rid of lots of excess pounds now, so that when we get to Texas we can be "Social" but within reason of course. I think that any effort to eat in a more healthful way as much as you can is so much better than not trying at all....SO WE ARE!

Had the big salad for lunch. Went for my 40 minute walk.

Had home made vegetable soup for supper and left over vegetable taco salad without the tacos.

Day 11

Weight stayed the same this morning, same for Katie who has been the same for 3 days. Sugar level still in the 7's rather than the 8's so that is a very good thing.

Regular breakfast...you must be getting tired of reading that...but I am still not getting tired of having it.

Just before lunch took my glucose reading again...6.2 excellent!

Big salad for lunch again with home made thousand island dressing.

Went for my usual route...40 minute walk...hot hot today.

Day 10

244.6 lbs today, up .4/lb but I think I am retaining a bit of fluid...glucose reading 6.9..what I can tell you is if I was not eating this way, I would definitely be over 8 every morning. Katie for the third day in a row stayed the same weight wise. She is going to read in the book why it might be that she is stuck now.

The other point is that neither one of us is exercising except for one day. I went for a 40 minute walk and Katie went on the elliptical for 20 minutes. We have do start exercising on a regular basis.

Will have the regular breakfast this morning, with a side of vitamins. We have added B12 to ensure that we are getting enough protein, although eating beans and lentils are a good source of protein.

Big salad with home made dressing for lunch

We had a really good supper...Katie made her own version of Taco Salad, without the taco chips of course...but it was excellent!

Katie made homemade Thousand Island Dressing, there was salad and beans and onions and taco spices...mmmmm!

Fruit for dessert

Stayed the same weight wise this morning 244.2, blood sugar 7.2 still heading in the right direction. Usually in the morning before starting this program, I am always over 8.

Regular breakfast this morning.

Had a nice big salad for lunch with home made dressing.

For Dinner, Katie made a vegetarian pizza, which is on a whole wheat tortilla, home made tomato sauce, basil, oregeno, garlic, italian spice, pepper, toppings...red peppers, zuchini, mushrooms, onion, and green pepper....very delicious!!!!

Fruit for desert...apple pieces, strawberry, green grapes.
